It is bordered with Thirunelveli District in the North and Northeast Kerala in the North West, Arabian Sea in the West, Indian Ocean in the South, the Gulf of Mannar in the East and Bay of Bengal. It has a coastline of 68 km stretched on the three sides. This small District is famous for its vast green fields, coconut groves, forest wealth and is dotted withlarge number of ponds. The total population of Kanyakumari district was 17.5 lakhs.

Kanyakumari has its ancient history dating back to the Sangam age and is a cradle of civilization in the past of India. The district has a large number of historic monuments and temples. A series of Kingdoms are known to have ruled Kanyakumari most important being Chera, Chola and Pandya. Up to early fifties of this century, this region was part of Travancore Samasthanam, present day Kerala, where the Tamil speaking majority population struggled to merge with Tamilnadu, and Kanyakumari become part of Tamil Nadu afterthe constitution of the state reorganizing Commission in 1956. On the recommendation of the commission, Agastheeswaram, Thovalai, Kalkulam, Vilavacodeand Senkottai taluks were given to Tamil Nadu,among which the first four taluks were grouped to form a new Kanyakumari District. On 1st November 1956 the present Kanyakumari District came into existence with headquarters at Nagercoil.
